Recognizing the Signs of Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer survival rates have increased dramatically over the last several years, due in large part to early screen tests. These tests have been credited with detecting about 85% of prostate cancers, and this earlier detection means a greater chance of a successful treatment outcome.

Warning Signs

Unfortunately, very few men experience symptoms of prostate cancer before diagnosis, but there are factors that may indicate cancer or other prostate issues. It is important to note that if you do have these symptoms, it does not necessarily mean that you have prostate cancer, but it does mean you should schedule an appointment with Kasraeian Urology today.

Urinary Symptoms

Key urinary issues that may indicate prostate cancer include:

  • A need to urinate frequently, especially at night
  • Difficulty starting urination or holding back urine
  • A weak or interrupted flow of urine
  • Painful or burning urination
  • Blood in the urine

Many of these symptoms can also be caused by an infection of the bladder or other conditions, so there is no need to panic, but you do want to schedule a urology appointment.

Erectile and Ejaculatory Symptoms

  • New onset of erectile dysfunction including difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Blood in the semen
  • Decreased volume of ejaculation*

*Semen volume can also be impacted by hydration, diet and frequency of ejaculation is the most likely cause of this issue.

Lower Extremity Symptoms

These symptoms include:

  • Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips or upper thighs
  • Swelling in the lower extremities

Please note that if you are experiencing bone pain and swelling in the lower extremities, especially when accompanied by urinary, erectile or ejaculation dysfunction, you need to schedule a urology appointment immediately as these could be symptoms of advanced prostate cancer.

Remember that you are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer through early screening tests than by these symptoms. However, if you notice any of these issues, you should schedule a urology appointment quickly to diagnose and treat the underlying cause of these problems.
